Portsmouth Listens hand delivers 5,259 invitations to participate in city’s master plan

Thirty-six volunteers delivered 5,259 Portsmouth Listens brochures Saturday in a citywide canvas to stimulate citizen input into Portsmouth’s next master plan. Portsmouth Listens recruited volunteers through the citywide Neighborhoods Committee, word of mouth and donated newspaper ads.

Volunteers distributed a brochure with mail-in reply cards enabling citizens to have their say in January. Study circles of 8-15 residents will work with a facilitator on the question "How can we make Portsmouth the best place to live and work?" The resulting reports will become part of the master plan input. In a second phase later in 2003, study circle participants will work with the planning board and staff on the issues raised in phase I, providing citizen input and guidance to the master plan process.

A reply mail form is part of the brochure. Residents can also get involved by signing up at www.Portsmouthlistens.org.

Canvas organizers John Tabor, Jim Noucas, Mica Stark and Dave Cohen set up a storefront headquarters at 68 State Street – space donated by Strawbery Banke. They gave volunteers brochures and highlighted maps to start their morning. Despite the snowy weather, volunteers did an outstanding job completing delivery in 34 walking routes mapped by canvas volunteers. The canvassers met afterward at Strawbery Banke for a bonfire and lunch of Moe's subs.

The brochure, which features pictures of Portsmouth residents displaying the study circles question, was designed as a community service by Brown and Company. Funding has been provided by the city and Ocean National Bank. Donuts were given free by Dunkin Donuts. Sponsoring organizations are the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, The Citywide Neighborhoods Association Committee, and the City of Portsmouth.
